On a walk around Waitati

This is a moment down the road from our driveway. Looking toward Blueskin Bay as the Waitati River flows into it. The Hill in the background is Warrington, well part of it, where I used to live.

The Estuary looking behind where the previous picture was taken. The begining of the Opera House land is on the right.

Blueskin Bay from Doctor's Point, a beach at the end of the road I live on. I'll take more pictures of the beach, at some point. I go there most days to unwind from work or watch the sunrise. Really a beautiful spot with big rocks and caves and when it's low tide you can continue walking to other beaches and if the timing's right see some penguins. hhhhhm I really love living here and being surrounded by so much beauty.

The Opera House

This is the main house of where I live. My wee cottage (or shack as christine thinks is more suiting... in a good way though, like a cool surfer's shack without the surfers or surf) is to the right of the main house. Thw whole property is called The Opera House- long story. The old telephone booth you see is our composting toilet.

The gardens around the house.

Can you see what's happening in this photo? haha! Luckily Rua is only interested and not hungry.

More home pics

This is Anita, as a nurse during a mock battle between Waitati (the town I live in) and a neighboring town. They do it once a year and is fun when everyone gets dressed up and into role. I was the photographer.

Got to have a cute Rua photo.

The scrapmetal truck came to take away old metal and a long-forgotten car. The truck was huge and so strong! I particularly liked the colors!
Another action shot.

Working Round Home

There is a lot of work to be done at home. I can't remember if I wrote this or not but the people who lived here before, well the ones for the last few years, did not take very good care of the house or the grounds. So everyone at home works really hard making the gardens look nice and finishing projects that were eagerly started years ago by people who weren't too motivated to put the work in after the initial excitement and creativity transformed into consistent hard work. So yeah, there's lots happening and it's looking really good! This is a square of soil I turned and am going to eventually build a bench on the porch and plant tulip bulbs. For now though it's coming into winter and my focus is gathering and chopping firewood.

This is Dylan, Anita's (the woman who lives in the main house- she is a painter who teaches at the art school. I really like her because we laugh a lot and she is easy going. Her partner, Beck lives there as well but I don't have any photos of him yet.) So yes, this is Dylan working in garden. He lives in a house truck and has a wee boy Oscar. They often come out on the weekends which I really enjoy because they are lovely people and Oscar is just so cute and laughs a lot. I really like laughing!

This is Jack finishing the front patio with brick. He's an artist that works with juxtaposition of nature and metal/steel type stuff. His work is pretty amazing. Jack lives in a home he's made for himself that is amazingly creative and began with a railway car. He's my chess opponent who used to be in the chess club so, yeah, he's really good. I've beaten him once...so far. I really enjoy getting to know him because he's quite quiet and is very thoughtful when conversing which slows me down from talking so much and I listen more.

This is my friend, Digby. We play tennis together and he's really good! He's making a table for me out of this stump. Pretty exciting!

Early Morning Fishing

A few weeks ago I woke up round 5am and went fishing with my mate Anthony. Truth be told I didn't really care too much about the fishing part of the experience. Instead I was real interested in what culture of fishing in Dunedin's harbor is like, the men, the feeling of hot coffee from my thermos(I made a hot carob, ricemilk, coconut drink instead of coffee.. perhaps one would call it a "hippy hot cocoa") on a cold autumn morning, the silence and stillness within, or rather just beyond, the still asleep city, the birds, and the colors as the sun rises. So yes I experienced all of this and it certainly was worth waking early and fumbling in the cold to get all my layers on. I didn't last too long on the fishing side of things as after an hour or so I went to a cafe, did some errands, and smiled inside when the weather turned to custard and we had to go home early.

This man was retired and as it was fished a lot! He was there most mornings and didn't leave when the weather turned. This was his 31st salmon of the season. He said this one wasn't really that big- I thought it was!
